3 Recipes Perfect for Date Night

I’m a big believer that food brings people together — and so does cooking! Spending time as a couple in the kitchen will not only help you to better understand your partner’s working style (which is key to a happy relationship) but you get to engage in a rewarding activity together.

So today, as part of a guest post for Love Out Loud Asia (LOLA), I’ll be sharing three super simple recipes that are great as bonding activities on date night. Whether you’re ready to call the cooking room your second home or complete novices, I promise these recipes can be done. Plus, all awkwardness is out the window here because you’ll actually have an activity to focus on, even if not on each other ha ha 🙂

The best part? Needless to say, it’s having a homemade meal to savour together when you’re done. You can thank me later.

Buttermilk Pancakes

Buttermilk Pancakes topped with strawberries, bananas, maple syrup and icing sugar.

I’m always finding ways to use up the second half of my buttermilk carton.

That’s because most of the time the recipes I use call for only a bit, plus it’s not like I’m feeding an army here at home. It’s terribly inconvenient that the supermarket stocks them in such large quantities.

And then, I thought of pancakes.

Yummy, scrumptious, light and fluffy buttermilk pancakes!

I’m a total breakfast person, so pancakes are definitely top of the list when it comes to my idea of an all-day breakfast menu.

Lemon Blueberry Cheesecake Bars

Lemon Blueberry Cheesecake Bars, ooh!

These bars are a dream. No kidding.

Granted it could be a biased opinion, since I adore anything that’s cream cheese cheesecake-y. But this one… I made them for the first time to be served at my birthday party recently, because blueberries and lemon went nicely with my theme colours: blue, white and yellow.

To my absolute delight and surprise, IT WAS A HUUUUGE HIT.

Getting compliments for my own bakes at my own 21st? It’s like the icing — or the blueberries? — on the cake!

Go Denim! Ely’s (21st) Denim Birthday Party

Denim Blue & White Birthday Party with a DIY tissue paper bunting :)

After two months or so of planning, my 21st birthday party has finally come and gone!

With much help from K, my cousin Athalie and my family (with the last minute decor, ha)… Thank God the party was a success. Everyone enjoyed themselves, I do believe, and it went according to how I’d planned — more or less.

It’s never going to be perfect because of the perfectionist that I am (yikes), but even then.

Yayyers, I’m twenty-one at last!

Blueberry Banana Buttermilk Bread

Blueberry Banana Buttermilk Bread, all gift-wrapped.

Blueberries have been on sale at the local supermarket!

I was so excited when I first found out, because they aren’t cheap over here. Plus, they go really well with my bakes, and I was just about to start the rhythm of baking again.

So I made some blueberry banana buttermilk bread (oh, the beautiful alliteration) on a whim.

Best of all, I made little portions which are just great for sharing!

Hello from my kitchen again!

Homecooking is my comfort.

School has been swallowing me whole. Not to mention the birthday prep and the party itself for my 21st just a few days back.

I haven’t been posting, and about my food all the more 😦 What I’ve missed is cooking at home. It’s probably not the food, but the cooking that is my comfort; going back to why I started this blog, you’ll know.

And hence, on impulse, I plated up after making lunch today, got my camera and set to work.

Individual Lemon Delicious

Lemon... Delicious!

Everyone deserves a second chance. Me included, on this dessert.

I tried it once before but failed — and that failure was also what pushed me to give up on my oven at home for my grandmother’s awesome one as well. And, as you can see, something good always comes out of a bad situation.

Thank the Lord, I finally know why this is called Lemon Delicious.

Blueberry Jam Topping

Mountain of mini waffles topped with blueberry heaven.

I’m feeling really excited as I write this.

My summer attachment has been eating away my weekdays (even nights), since I’m doing a desk-bound job no less. Ah, such is life.

But that invigorates the weekends all the more. I appreciate the TGIF syndrome like I haven’t before. All through the week, I make plans for cooking and baking, building up that adrenaline…

Yes, I have awesome kitchen plans this weekend 🙂

But first, let’s start with breakfast. (Naturally.)

Strawberry-Blueberry and Banana-Peach Cobblers

Strawberry-blueberry cobbler dusted wtih icing sugar, yum!

Presenting to you: summer on a plate!

Strawberries, blueberries and peaches… All the fruits that are splendid this time of the year. Not that we really have such local produce here in Singapore — or seasons at all, for that matter — but we do get hints from the food imports found in the supermarkets.

I had all these fruits piling up in my refridgerator, so I searched for a simple recipe to turn them into a delish dessert.

And, since this treat was so easy peasy to make, I decided to jump in with both feet, making two at one go!
